Fracking Site Restoration Denied Extension

Lancashire County Council has unanimously rejected Cuadrilla's request for an additional two years to restore its former fracking site, located near Blackpool. The site, which was the UK's first horizontal fracking facility, experienced over 120 tremors during its operation, resulting in the suspension of fracking activities in 2022.

Environmental groups and local community members, who had vehemently protested against any extension, welcomed the council's decision. They highlighted that the company had already missed a previous deadline for restoration work, which included plugging two wells. Concerns were raised about Cuadrilla not demonstrating good faith and using extension requests as a means for further delays.

The refusal means Cuadrilla must now proceed with restoring the Preston New Road site to its agricultural state. While Cuadrilla has the option to appeal, campaigners are urging the council to enforce immediate action. The practice of fracking has faced widespread opposition and regulatory suspension due to earthquake and environmental concerns, with a permanent ban planned in England.
