Researchers from the DEEPS Seismology Group note that before 2011, when highly sensitive seismometers were installed, numerous smaller earthquakes may have gone unnoticed.
Historical data shows only three earthquakes under magnitude 3.8 in Lake Michigan between 1900 and 2011, suggesting that many minor seismic activities could have been missed. While a heatwave was ruled out as a cause, changing water levels in Lake Michigan, which dropped significantly since 2020, are considered a likely trigger. This fluctuation could alter stresses in the Earth's crust beneath the lake, leading to tremors.
Scientists also point to glacial isostatic adjustment and climate change as potential, though less direct, contributing factors. They emphasize that enhanced detection capabilities, including machine learning, have improved the identification of even faint seismic events. Looking ahead, experts indicate that further earthquakes in Lake Michigan are possible, though they do not pose a tsunami risk.
