Summary
- Harmful blue-green algae toxins found in Lake Jesup.
- Health officials warn against water contact for humans and pets.
- Boiling water will not remove the dangerous toxins.

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County has issued a health alert for Lake Jesup after discovering harmful blue-green algae toxins. This discovery followed the collection and testing of a water sample on July 7.
Health officials are strongly recommending that people exercise caution when near Lake Jesup and actively avoid any contact with water where algae blooms are visible. Activities such as swimming, wading, and using personal watercraft are prohibited in affected areas.
Furthermore, the department issued a stern warning to pet owners and livestock handlers, emphasizing that animals should be kept away from the water as blue-green algae can be lethal to them. Residents who come into contact with the algae or discolored, foul-smelling water are advised to thoroughly wash their skin and clothing with soap and water.
The health department also clarified that cooking with or washing dishes in the contaminated water is unsafe, and boiling it will not eliminate the toxins. Blue-green algae can manifest as various forms on the water's surface, including scum, foam, or paint-like material, and can appear in shades of green, blue, brown, or red.
Factors such as warm temperatures, ample sunlight, stagnant water, and excessive nutrients contribute to the formation of these blooms, which are particularly prevalent during the summer and fall months. For those experiencing symptoms after exposure, the Florida Poison Information Center can be reached at 800-222-1222, and suspected blooms can be reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection at 855-305-3903.
