Florida Lake Hazard: Blue-Green Algae Warning
20 Jun
Summary
- DOH-Seminole warns of harmful blue-green algae toxins in Lake Howell.
- Public advised to avoid contact with water and keep pets away.
- Boiling contaminated water will not eliminate toxins.

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County is cautioning the public about the potential presence of harmful blue-green algae toxins in Lake Howell. Although water sample testing is in progress, the department emphasizes the need for caution as environmental conditions can change rapidly.
Residents and visitors are urged to refrain from drinking, swimming, wading, or coming into contact with the water, especially if a bloom is visible. It is also critical to keep pets and livestock away from the lake and ensure they have an alternative water source. Washing with soap and water is recommended after any skin contact with algae or discolored water.
Furthermore, the health department advises against cooking or cleaning dishes with contaminated water, as boiling does not neutralize the toxins. While eating fish caught from affected waters is safe after proper rinsing and thorough cooking, shellfish consumption is not advised. Blue-green algae are bacteria common in Florida's freshwater environments, and their blooms can discolor water and produce unpleasant odors and floating mats.
