Lake District Fines New Powers for Anti-Social Behaviour
1 Apr
Summary
- New powers allow fines for anti-social behaviour at beauty spots.
- Up to £100 fines for littering, fires, and camping misconduct.
- Orders cover 12 new sites in the Lake District, including popular areas.

New powers to fine individuals involved in anti-social behaviour at popular beauty spots have been enacted by Westmorland and Furness Council. These public space protection orders (PSPOs) are now active at an additional 12 locations across the Lake District, including Ambleside, Ullswater, Haweswater Reservoir, and Windermere. The measures aim to address concerns raised by residents and landowners regarding environmental damage, littering, and inappropriate camping or motorhome use. Fines of up to £100 can be issued for such offences, with potential increases to £1,000 if not paid promptly. Council officers will patrol these areas alongside Cumbria Police during the upcoming Easter break to ensure compliance. The council emphasized that responsible visitors will not be affected by these new regulations and encouraged the public to report any issues encountered. Several National Trust sites, along with land managed by Lake District Estates, Patterdale Parish Council, and United Utilities, are included within the scope of these orders.
