30 Aug
Summary

- Ten illegal campsites were removed in the last two weeks.

Cumberland Council has reported significant enforcement activity against illegal camping in the Lake District during the summer months. Council officials actively engaged with over 100 individuals who were camping inappropriately in scenic and protected areas. This engagement resulted in the removal of 10 campsites in just the last two weeks of the summer period.
Further action included issuing fixed penalty notices to offenders. One notable case involved a vehicle driving across a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) to reach a lake shore, causing considerable damage to the delicate ecosystem. The council has also launched a public awareness campaign, installing signs in popular locations like Keswick and Wasdale.
Councillor Denise Rollo emphasized the importance of protecting Cumberland's natural assets. While education and engagement are preferred, the council stated it will take robust enforcement action against persistent anti-social behavior and environmental damage. The core message to visitors is to enjoy the area responsibly, respect local communities and wildlife, and leave no trace.
