Black bears have become regular visitors to a Los Angeles couple's swimming pool and garden, with the residents embracing a unique coexistence. Brian Gordon and Ricardo Martinez, residing in Monrovia, Los Angeles County, have documented their furry visitors, who stop by several times a week. Their home borders the Angeles National Forest, a habitat for approximately 1,600 black bears. The couple emphasizes maintaining a healthy distance and staying indoors when bears are present. While these encounters are positive, urban bear activity is increasing across Southern California. Experts note that bears are intelligent and adaptable, often seeking calories in populated areas, leading to issues like raided trash bins and home break-ins. To minimize conflict, experts recommend communities restrict access to attractants like garbage and food. Gordon and Martinez practice extreme vigilance with waste management, storing trash away from their home.
