Families living along Siswan Road in Kurali, Punjab, have endured unbearable conditions due to the illegal dumping of solid waste by the Kurali Municipal Council (MC). The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken strong exception to this practice, which violates Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016. Residents have been suffering from a constant stench, swarms of flies, and mosquitoes.

The NGT's Principal Bench directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to file a detailed compliance and action-taken report within four weeks. A personal undertaking from the executive officer of Kurali MC was also requested. This action follows an application by residents who allege the MC abandoned its previous landfill site without permission and began dumping waste near residential zones, including schools and colonies.

An inspection by the PPCB confirmed multiple violations, including dumping within 200 metres of a highway and water body, lack of a leachate treatment system, and improper waste segregation. The PPCB had previously imposed environmental compensation exceeding Rs 80 lakh on the Kurali MC. The NGT noted that despite continued violations, effective steps to recover compensation or act against officials were lacking. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on April 28.
