A dispute over alleged encroachment on a canal embankment in the East Kolkata Wetlands has sparked protests by approximately 500 fish farm workers. The workers, employed in several bheris in Tardaha Kapasati mouza, are unable to access their workplaces due to a boundary erected by Kushal Agrigenix LLP. This company claims ownership of 50 bighas within the bheri area and is accused of blocking the vital right of way on refugee rehabilitation department land.
This blocked passage, situated near the Basanti Highway, is the sole access for workers and villagers from surrounding areas to reach the Ashok Ghosher Bheri and other adjacent fish farms. The closure impedes the transportation of fish, feed, and equipment, posing a significant threat to the fish farming operations. An NGO, Society for Creative Opportunities and Participatory Ecosystems, has lodged a complaint with the East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority, while local workers have approached the police station.
