Kochi's Canals Polluted: 750 Illegal Sewage Outlets Found
22 Jan
Summary
- Over 750 illegal sewage outlets into Kochi canals were identified since 2023.
- Enforcement actions were taken following a National Green Tribunal case.
- Immediate measures include shutting outlets and cleaning canals of waste.

Since 2023, official estimates reveal that approximately 750 illegal outlets discharging untreated sewage into the Edappally, Thevara-Perandoor, and Mullassery canals have been detected through joint inspections in Kochi. These actions are part of enforcement measures related to Vembanad lake pollution, before the National Green Tribunal in New Delhi.
As of January 16, 2026, around 100 illegal drainage outlets into the Mullassery and Thevara-Perandoor canals were shut down. Enforcement squads identified numerous violations, including sewage discharge from houses into the Mullassery Canal and many outlets along the Thevara-Perandoor canal. Notices were issued, and violators are being prosecuted, with some complying and others facing pipeline closures.
The Department of Local Self-Government has informed the National Green Tribunal about immediate measures taken to remove these outlets and initiated canal cleaning. Enforcement was intensified following reports of significant contamination in lake and drain samples. Special inspection teams are being formed to ensure all illegal outlets are closed and canals are cleaned, with the goal of preventing future pollution incidents.
