Summary
- Know Your Fish promotes ocean conservation through informed seafood choices.
- An online calendar guides consumers on sustainable fish consumption.
- Bycatch data reveals significant waste in India's marine capture.

Choosing what's for dinner can now contribute to ocean conservation through the Know Your Fish (KYF) initiative. Founded by marine biologists, KYF aims to reconnect people with the ocean by providing knowledge and tools for sustainable seafood consumption.
The initiative features an online calendar for west coast India, recommending fish based on scientific criteria such as trophic level, population resilience, and fishing methods. It assigns vulnerability scores to species, with positive scores indicating safer choices and negative scores serving as warnings.
KYF sheds light on the significant issue of bycatch, where non-target species like turtles and sharks, along with juvenile fish, are unintentionally caught. Alarmingly, a substantial portion of this bycatch in India, estimated at 56.3% of marine capture, is processed into fishmeal. This highlights how unknowingly supporting certain seafood can perpetuate the problem.
The KYF calendar advises avoiding species during peak breeding seasons and emphasizes the collateral damage, including bycatch and habitat impact, associated with fishing. The monsoon fishing ban, initially for socio-economic reasons for small-scale fishers, has later shown benefits for fish stocks, though only 17 out of 86 studied species peak breed during this period.
Furthermore, KYF engages the public through its 'Fish with Eggs' project, encouraging citizen scientists to report sightings of egg-bearing fish. This collaborative effort helps refine data and protect future seafood generations, proving that small, informed choices can create substantial positive change for marine abundance.
