This initiative, part of the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, addresses the coastal community's vulnerability to cyclones, rising seas, and saltwater intrusion. The comprehensive ₹230.15-lakh CRV framework for Killai emphasizes practical, nature-based solutions. A 3-km section of the Buckingham Canal has been desilted and cleared of waste, with 3,000 native mangrove saplings planted along its banks. This restoration enhances water flow, supports wetland health, and provides a natural buffer against coastal erosion and storm surges. Local residents actively participated in clearing approximately 750 kg of plastic waste.
Furthermore, Killai is embracing renewable energy to enhance resilience against power disruptions, a common issue during cyclones. Public buildings now feature solar rooftop systems, and a solar electric boat has been introduced for eco-tourism on the Pichavaram mangroves. Educational programs are also in place to foster environmental stewardship among students, ensuring the long-term sustainability of these climate-resilient measures.
