5 Sep
Summary
- Four children protested a proposed stone crusher unit by climbing a hill.
- Residents have long opposed the unit due to potential harm to farmland and livestock.
- Police intervention led to the children being safely brought down.
Four schoolchildren staged a dramatic protest on Saturday, climbing a rocky hillock near Manapparai to oppose a proposed stone crusher unit in their village of Rettamalai Patti. The children, aged between 10 and 14, remained atop 'Chinna Karadu' for nearly three hours, demanding the cancellation of the unit's permit.
Local residents have a history of opposing the stone crusher unit, citing concerns about its adverse impact on farmland and livestock. Previous protests, including road blockades, and appeals to the district administration had not yielded a resolution.
Police officials were called to the scene and engaged with the children, encouraging them to come down by promising to facilitate discussions with the authorities. The children were safely escorted off the hillock around 11:30 AM.
