Desert Blooms: Khejri Tree's Green Revolution
5 Jun
Summary
- Khejri trees are restoring greenery and biodiversity.
- Over 98% of 4,500 saplings survived harsh desert conditions.
- The tree provides fodder, food, and income for local communities.

The Khejri tree, a vital species in Rajasthan's Thar Desert, is driving a significant environmental restoration in the Barmer district. At Vedanta Oil & Gas-Cairn's Mangala Processing Terminal, efforts initiated in 2022 have converted barren land into a thriving green zone. This initiative saw the planting of nearly 4,500 saplings, predominantly Khejri, with an outstanding 98% survival rate.
The Khejri tree, often called the 'Kalpavriksha of the Desert,' is exceptionally adapted to extreme drought and heat. Its deep root system accesses water far below the surface, preventing soil erosion and improving soil fertility. This allows other plant species to flourish, leading to a noticeable increase in bird and pollinator activity.
Beyond its ecological importance, the Khejri tree sustains local communities. Its leaves provide fodder for livestock, and its pods are a valuable food ingredient and income source. The tree's resilience and benefits underscore the success of integrating modern conservation with traditional ecological knowledge, demonstrating that restoration is achievable even in harsh desert environments.
