27 Apr
Summary
- High UV index alerts issued across Kerala districts
- Public advised to avoid sun exposure between 10 am and 3 pm
- UV index scale explained from low (1) to extreme (11+)

Kerala has issued a public health advisory due to significantly high ultraviolet (UV) index levels recorded across several districts. Authorities have noted UV index readings above 8, classifying them as an orange alert, in areas including Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki. Additionally, yellow alerts, indicating UV index levels of 6-7, were reported in Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) recommends avoiding prolonged direct sunlight exposure between 10 am and 3 pm, the period when UV radiation is most intense. Essential protective measures include wearing hats, using umbrellas, opting for sunglasses, and choosing loose-fitting cotton clothing that covers the body fully. Resting in shaded areas during outdoor activities is also advised.
