Kerala Launches Bird Atlas 2.0 Survey
15 Jul
Summary
- Kerala has launched its second citizen science bird atlas initiative.
- The survey aims to document changes in bird populations over time.
- Findings will inform conservation planning and ecological policy.

Kerala Forest Minister Shibu Baby John formally inaugurated the Kerala Bird Atlas 2.0 on Wednesday in Thiruvananthapuram. This launch marks the commencement of the second phase of a significant citizen science initiative, occurring five years after the first state-wide bird atlas was released.
The project will undertake systematic surveys, conducted twice annually from mid-July to mid-September and mid-January to mid-March. The state has been meticulously divided into grids and quadrants for effective sampling during these surveys.
Organizers highlighted that the initial atlas provided vital insights into the status and distribution of Kerala's birds. By repeating these surveys at regular intervals, the project is expected to help scientists and conservationists monitor long-term shifts in bird abundance and distribution.
The findings from the Kerala Bird Atlas 2.0 are anticipated to serve as valuable indicators of ecological change. This data will be instrumental in ensuring informed conservation planning and policy development for the region's biodiversity.
