As the Chardham Yatra season approaches, Rudraprayag district administration has initiated a significant snow-clearing operation on the Kedarnath trek. The pilgrimage is scheduled to begin soon, with the Yamunotri and Gangotri temples opening on April 19, followed by Kedarnath on April 22. Last year, the shrine welcomed nearly 17.7 lakh devotees, and similar high numbers are anticipated.
Deep snow layers from a harsh winter present a major challenge, with depths of 15 to 18 feet reported at the Bhairav and Kuber glacier points. A 60-person workforce has been deployed, split into two teams: one working down from Kedarnath shrine and the other up from Chhoti Lincholi. Their focus is clearing six obstructed glacier points to ensure the route is safe and accessible before the temple doors open.
The administration is committed to providing seamless facilities, prioritizing route clearance, comprehensive security, and essential amenities. The operation's pace is being closely monitored, with potential for additional manpower deployment if needed to meet the deadline for the Yatra.
