Kayak Hero Saves Swan from Fishing Peril
7 Jul
Summary
- A pub landlord used his kayak to rescue an injured swan.
- The swan was trapped with fishing wire and a large lure near its beak.
- The rescued swan was released back to its family and cygnets.

A male swan was rescued from a near-fatal injury thanks to the swift actions of a local pub landlord, Adam Szczypior, and the Sussex Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (SVFRS). The swan was discovered in Langstone Harbour, Hampshire, with fishing wire and a large lure dangerously entangled between its beak and wing.
Recognizing the urgency, Szczypior utilized his kayak, a more maneuverable vessel than the SVFRS's rowing boat, to reach the distressed bird. The swan was bleeding heavily, and its mate had attempted to assist. A regular customer provided a landing net to help secure the swan during the rescue.
The bird was then transported to a wildlife hospital for treatment, including pain relief. Fortunately, the swan made a full recovery and was released back to its family, including four cygnets, the following day. SVFRS highlighted the dangers posed by careless fishing practices in the area.
This incident occurred on a Saturday, with the swan's release on Sunday. The SVFRS, a self-funding group with 18 volunteer firefighters, also responded to a fox cub rescue in Portsmouth on the same day, emphasizing their commitment to animal welfare.
