Kashmir's Fragile Peaks: Experts Urge Action on Glacial Lake Risks

The Nepal disaster, which resulted in significant loss of life, has prompted environmental and social activists in Jammu and Kashmir to urge immediate government action. Experts highlight an increased risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Kashmir valley, Kishtwar, Poonch, and Ladakh due to global warming.

Environmental filmmakers and trekkers observe concerning signs of rapid glacial retreat and accelerated melting across various alpine lakes and glaciers in J&K. They warn that the transformation of these fragile mountain systems, coupled with increasing human activity near glacial terrains, could lead to devastating consequences.

Scientific assessment, continuous monitoring, and early warning systems are identified as top priorities. Specific glacial lake systems in Kishtwar and multiple lakes in Kashmir are deemed highly susceptible to GLOF. Studies indicate a significant number of glacial lakes in J&K are vulnerable.

Activists stress that the Nepal tragedy must serve as a wake-up call, emphasizing the need for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh's environment and sustainable policies. Concerns also include unchecked development in ecologically sensitive areas and the encroachment of wetlands, which act as natural buffers against floods.
