Karnataka Launches First Plastic Waste Unit

Karnataka has launched its first plastic waste management unit in Shettihalli village, Mandya district. This facility aims to combat the adverse environmental and health effects of indiscriminate plastic waste disposal.

The unit operates by collecting, segregating, and compressing plastic waste into bales. These bales are then sent to recycling units and factories. This scientific processing not only ensures environmentally safe management but also creates revenue from the waste.

A significant aspect of this initiative is the active involvement of women from self-help groups. These women are trained in waste collection and operating the unit's machinery, demonstrating confidence and competence. Their contribution is highlighted as a model for other local bodies.

Officials emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in waste segregation at source and scientific disposal. The goal is to extend this successful model to all gram panchayats in the taluk, fostering self-reliance and sustainability in waste management.
