According to the news, on September 29, 2025, Karnataka's Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre praised the state's mahouts and kavadis for their exceptional skills in taming and managing elephants. Addressing the mahouts, kavadis, and their families at the Mysuru Palace, where they are currently caring for the 14 Dasara elephants, the minister acknowledged that their hereditary expertise plays a vital role in these operations.
The minister noted that Karnataka's mahouts and kavadis are known across India for their exceptional abilities, with neighboring states often requesting their assistance during elephant capture operations. While the government provides specialized professional training to enhance their efficiency, the minister emphasized that the art of taming elephants cannot be taught in classrooms but is a skill passed down through generations.
Additionally, the minister announced that a memorial for Arjuna, the famous elephant that carried the golden howdah (Ambari) eight times during the Mysuru Dasara festival, will be inaugurated later this month at Yasalur in Hassan district. Arjuna, who died during an elephant capture operation near Yasalur, has already been honored with a memorial at Balle in Nagarahole.
