In response to escalating human-elephant conflict, the Karnataka government has announced plans to establish a significant elephant soft release center. This facility is set to encompass 2,000 hectares and is designed to address the issue of elephants straying from forest areas in Hassan, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
The primary objectives of this initiative are to curb crop damage and reduce the loss of human lives. A report on the feasibility of this center has been submitted by the principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife), and the tender process is expected to commence soon.
Separately, the government is actively working to reclaim valuable land belonging to the forest department. A notable effort includes the reclamation of 100 acres of forest land situated in Madenuru, near Hassan city, highlighting a commitment to protecting and managing forest resources.
