Karnataka Minister Warns: "Environment Doesn't Need Humans to Survive"

In a stark warning, Karnataka's Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Eshwar Khandre, emphasized that the environment does not need human beings to survive, but the human race will perish if nature is destroyed. Khandre made these remarks during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board in Ballari on October 7th, 2025.

The minister cautioned that climate change has intensified natural disasters, and global warming is the root cause of many calamities. He noted that increasing levels of water, air, and noise pollution are causing extensive damage to human life and biodiversity. Khandre praised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for being one of the first global leaders to raise her voice for environmental protection.

Looking to the future, the minister stated that Karnataka currently has 43,000 sq. km (around one crore acres) of forest cover, which is about 21% of the state's total area. Efforts are underway to increase this to 33%, as recommended by global experts. Khandre also highlighted Karnataka's rich biodiversity, including five national parks, five tiger reserves, 37 wildlife sanctuaries, and 19 conservation reserves.

The minister emphasized that strict implementation of water and air pollution control acts will be ensured, and industries will be warned against discharging untreated waste into lakes, rivers, and tanks. He also advised local bodies and the pollution control board to use funds effectively for sustainable development and environmental protection in Ballari.
