Wildfire Alerts Escalate as Summer Heat Intensifies
12 Apr
Summary
- Forest department deploys extra staff and locals for fire monitoring.
- AI surveillance cameras are now active in Bandipur and BRT reserves.
- Pre-monsoon rains provided much-needed moisture, easing fire concerns.

In response to escalating summer temperatures, Karnataka's forest department has significantly bolstered wildfire prevention strategies across Chamarajanagar district, a region with substantial forest cover. Special emphasis is placed on critical areas including the BRT and Bandipur tiger reserves, alongside the Cauvery and MM Hills wildlife sanctuaries, and forest fringes near major roadways.
To enhance vigilance, the department has deployed additional personnel, forest watchers, and local community members. Key measures include digging trenches and creating extensive fire lines in vulnerable zones. Notably, artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras and rapid response systems have been installed in Bandipur and BRT tiger reserves, enabling prompt detection of fire incidents.
While past wildfire incidents in February and March, such as those in MM Hills Sanctuary and BRT Tiger Reserve, had a minimal impact, officials are prepared for the season. Fortunately, recent pre-monsoon rains in mid-March and early April have been beneficial, raising moisture levels and promoting vegetation growth. This rainfall has eased concerns about widespread fires and improved water availability for wildlife in areas like Bandipur.
