Karachi is grappling with a monumental waste management challenge, generating an overwhelming 14,800 tonnes of garbage each day. This daily refuse surpasses the levels seen in comparison cities like Mumbai and Delhi, underscoring the urgency of the situation. A significant portion of this waste, approximately 42%, is organic material with potential for biogas and compost production.
The city is also a major contributor to Pakistan's plastic waste, responsible for 25% of the nation's total recyclable plastic. In a bid to address waste issues and energy needs, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board is launching its first biogas plant on December 15th. This facility in Clifton will process livestock waste to provide affordable cooking fuel to approximately 70-80 households.
Further initiatives include plans for another biogas plant at Cattle Colony to combat marine pollution and the implementation of fines for vehicles that scatter waste. The SSWMB is deploying over 13,000 workers and using advanced technology for waste monitoring, alongside a helpline and mobile app for public complaints.
