Kanpur Metro Saves Lakhs of Liters Daily

Summary

  • Kanpur Metro develops 24 lakh litre rainwater harvesting capacity across corridors.
  • Recycled water from STPs and ETPs used for horticulture and train washing.
  • Water-efficient fixtures save millions of litres annually across stations.

In observance of 'Groundwater Week,' the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) is actively promoting water conservation through various sustainable initiatives. Kanpur Metro is set to achieve a rainwater harvesting capacity of nearly 24 lakh litres across its two operational corridors.

This initiative includes channeling rainwater from the viaduct into constructed recharge pits, with approximately 250 pits already in place for Corridor-1. The Gurudev Crossing Depot operates as a zero discharge facility, treating and recycling wastewater.

Equipped with a 10,000 litres per day Sewage Treatment Plant and a 70,000 litres per day Effluent Treatment Plant, the depot reuses treated water for horticulture and landscaping. Metro trains are cleaned using recycled water at an automatic washing plant, conserving significant fresh water.

Furthermore, UPMRC has installed water-efficient fixtures in stations, saving 30-40% more water than conventional ones. These combined efforts are expected to conserve millions of litres of water annually, reinforcing the commitment to water resource management.
