26 Apr
Summary
- Bombay high court judges inspected Kanjurmarg landfill on Saturday.
- The site is the 12th highest methane-emitting landfill globally.
- 6,300 metric tonnes of Mumbai's waste reach Kanjurmarg daily.

Bombay high court judges conducted a two-hour surprise inspection of the Kanjurmarg landfill and its waste treatment facility on Saturday, April 26, 2026. Justices Girish Kulkarni and Aarti Sathe are presiding over a petition filed by Kannamwar Nagar residents concerned about rising pollution levels.
The Kanjurmarg landfill was recently identified as the 12th highest methane-emitting site globally, according to a 2026 study. The facility processes approximately 6,300 metric tonnes of Mumbai's municipal solid waste daily, accounting for 90% of the city's total.
During their visit, the judges expressed concerns about the landfill's proximity to the densely populated Kannamwar Nagar residential area and significant mangrove zones. They were presented with information on waste recycling, power generation from methane, and mitigation efforts implemented by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The BMC team showcased the processing plant, material recovery facility, and tarpomatic coverings. They also presented a report from a high-powered monitoring committee, which recommended immediate odour-control measures, engineering upgrades, and a long-term shift to advanced waste-processing technologies.
