J&K Boosts E-Bus Fleet: Free Rides for Women!

The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to enhance its public transport system by introducing an additional 200 smart electric buses for Jammu and Srinagar. This expansion is driven by a growing demand for environmentally friendly travel options and the continuation of a free bus service for women passengers. Officials indicate that the procurement process is nearing completion, with the new buses expected to join the fleet within the next few months.

These new smart e-buses will extend service coverage to more rural areas and popular tourist destinations, strengthening the region's commitment to efficient and green transportation. The initiative includes 100 e-buses for Srinagar and 100 for Jammu, approved under the Srinagar Smart City Limited project. These modern buses feature air conditioning, GPS tracking, and smart ticketing for improved reliability and passenger safety.

Transport department secretary Avny Lavasa affirmed that the new fleet acquisition by the SRTC is in addition to other ongoing procurements. Addressing concerns about revenue, she highlighted the substantial intangible social benefits of the free bus service for women, stating it is a welfare scheme whose impact cannot be solely measured by financial metrics. The government plans to phase out older, traditional buses in favor of these newer, eco-friendly alternatives.
