Jharkhand's Forests: Climate Finance & Conservation Plan
15 Oct
Summary
- Jharkhand plans a state-specific REDD+ roadmap for climate finance.
- The initiative aims to protect forests, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
- Challenges include carbon baselines and community rights protection.
Jharkhand has initiated the development of a state-specific road map under the global REDD+ framework. This strategic move aims to secure results-based climate finance while simultaneously bolstering forest conservation efforts, protecting biodiversity, and improving community livelihoods. The proposal was recently discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by the principal chief conservator of forests.
With a substantial forest cover of 23,765.78 sq km, Jharkhand holds significant potential for a REDD+ program. The initiative is designed to reduce deforestation, conserve carbon-rich sal forests and wildlife, promote sustainable forest management, and restore degraded areas. Key considerations include establishing credible carbon baselines, developing robust monitoring systems, and creating transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms.
