Sea Launch Defuses Fire Concerns for Festival
10 Aug
Summary
- Fireworks finale will proceed despite wildfire risk concerns.
- Professional sea launch mitigates risks of sparks on land.
- Two private displays were canceled due to updated risk assessments.

The upcoming fireworks finale for Jersey's Battle of Flowers is set to proceed, even with an elevated risk of wildfires due to recent hot and dry weather conditions. Jersey Fire and Rescue Service had previously flagged concerns about any open flames, including fireworks and bonfires, given the high potential for furze fires. However, the Battle of Flowers Association has stated that safety remains their utmost priority.
The association explained that the fireworks will be professionally launched from a boat at sea. This method, they highlighted, fundamentally differs from land-based displays and significantly lowers the probability of sparks contacting dry vegetation. Consequently, the risk of igniting fires is considerably reduced.
This approach contrasts with decisions made by private organizers. Starburst Fireworks canceled two planned displays on August 8 due to updated risk assessments. The Battle of Flowers Association acknowledged the concerns but stressed that their event's fireworks were not decided upon lightly. Comprehensive risk assessments, safety controls, and weather condition considerations are integral to their planning.
