A family's dream of renovating their newly acquired five-bedroom Victorian home was significantly disrupted by a hidden Japanese knotweed infestation. Nathan Hannaway and his partner purchased the property for £430,000 but soon discovered five shoots of the invasive weed in their garden. The plant's aggressive growth, spreading through an extensive underground root system, had gone undetected.
The cost to eradicate the Japanese knotweed was a substantial £15,000, a figure that came as a shock to Hannaway and significantly impacted their renovation budget. Their new home is located in Whitehall, near Blackburn, Lancashire, a neighborhood that has been identified as the UK's worst postcode for Japanese knotweed infestations, with 92 recorded cases.
Blackburn with Darwen borough has the highest number of cases nationally, with 2,135 incidences recorded. This invasive plant poses a significant threat to gardens and property values, as it can damage structures and complicate property sales. Estate agents are advised to disclose knotweed presence as material information, as it can delay or even collapse sales.
