A new award, the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal, has been established in honor of the renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, who passed away this year. Sir Brian May, co-founder of the science, music, and arts festival Starmus, announced the initiative, aiming to inspire action for Earth's preservation. Goodall herself supported the medal's creation, with her grandson, Merlin van Lawick, stating it will acknowledge sustainable programs.
The first recipients are expected to be revealed at the Starmus VIII festival, scheduled to take place in Tenerife and La Palma from October 17-22 next year. This award is designed to recognize and encourage those dedicated to making the planet a better place for people, animals, and the environment, echoing Goodall's lifelong commitment.
Starmus co-founder Garik Israelian mentioned the medal might include multiple categories, similar to the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication previously created by the festival. The festival's theme for next year, "the search for truth," addresses growing concerns about misinformation, particularly in critical areas like climate science.
