Jamshedpur Lags on New Waste Segregation Rules
23 Jul
Summary
- Jamshedpur has not yet implemented the new four-bin waste segregation system.
- The rules, effective April 1, 2026, aim to improve recycling and reduce pollution.
- Awareness campaigns and a phased rollout are planned before penalties are imposed.

As of July 23, 2026, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has not yet implemented the mandatory four-bin waste segregation system. These revised Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, came into effect on April 1, 2026, requiring households and businesses to sort waste into four categories. This system replaces the previous wet-dry division and is designed to boost recycling and decrease pollution.
The four categories include green bins for biodegradable waste, blue for dry recyclables, black for hazardous materials like e-waste and expired medicines, and red for sanitary waste. JNAC municipal commissioner Yogendra Prasad indicated that preparations are underway, emphasizing public awareness as critical for success. Dedicated collection vehicles with separate compartments for each waste type will be deployed once residents are familiar with the system.
A pilot program distributing four color-coded bins to select households has commenced, but it is considered a preliminary step. Penalties for non-compliance will be introduced after thorough awareness efforts and a phased implementation of the new segregation system across Jamshedpur. The JNAC area generates approximately 470 metric tonnes of waste daily.
