31 Oct
Summary
- Green medians will be installed to prevent vehicle and cart encroachment.
- The pilot project aims to improve pedestrian safety and walkability.
- Tenders have been floated, with construction set to begin by November end.
Jaipur is set to pilot a new initiative where green medians will be constructed along the edges of 11 city pavements. This project, spearheaded by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA), aims to reclaim pedestrian space effectively. The landscaped barriers are designed to prevent cars, two-wheelers, and vendors from occupying footpaths, thus ensuring clearer and safer walkways for citizens.
This experiment will assess the viability of green edges in making pavements more walkable and cleaner in high-traffic areas. A JDA engineer noted that footpath encroachment is a persistent issue, with vehicles and vendors frequently obstructing pedestrian movement. The new design has already been implemented on Bhawani Singh Marg near Rambagh Hotel and is expected to beautify the city's stretches.
Tenders for the project have been released, and bids are anticipated to open in mid-November. The JDA plans to commence construction work by the end of November, with proposed locations including Bhagwan Das Road and JLN Marg, among others. Future implementation in residential areas is also being considered.
