A significant 24-hour wildlife census commenced on Friday evening across forest areas managed by the Jaipur wildlife division. This exercise coincides with the auspicious occasion of Vaishakh Purnima, beginning at 5pm on May 1 and concluding at 5pm on May 2. The primary objective is to achieve an accurate estimate of the wildlife population within the Jaipur forest region.
This detailed count is designed to facilitate enhanced scientific planning for conservation and effective wildlife management. The census will employ the waterhole method, observing animals as they naturally gather at water sources. This technique is particularly effective during full moon nights, improving visibility and reliability of observations.
A total of 59 water points have been designated for the census. These include nine locations within Nahargarh Biological Park, 19 in Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary, and 31 spread across various territorial forest ranges. The enumeration process will be carried out by trained forest personnel alongside selected volunteers.
To ensure the highest level of accuracy, observational posts, known as machans, have been erected near all identified water sources. Furthermore, camera traps have been strategically installed for scientific monitoring. This comprehensive approach is expected to yield reliable data on various species, including tigers and leopards, by leveraging the improved visibility during the full moon period.
The forest department has issued an appeal to the public, requesting cooperation by avoiding unnecessary movement in forest areas during the census period. This measure is crucial for minimizing disturbance and ensuring the success of these vital wildlife conservation efforts.
