Jaipur's sewage crisis: Lakes under threat

Jaipur's sewage treatment infrastructure is critically insufficient, leading to substantial volumes of untreated wastewater contaminating local water bodies. Water resources department officials report that nearly 80% of daily water consumed generates sewage. With the city consuming around 1,000 MLD, approximately 800 MLD of sewage is produced, far exceeding the sewerage system's 450 MLD capacity.

This shortfall means untreated sewage is regularly discharged into dams, wetlands, and lakes, impacting water quality significantly. The historic Jal Mahal Lake is among those affected, alongside four to five other major dams and lakes on the city's outskirts. Although the Jaipur Municipal Corporation is undertaking projects, experts emphasize the urgent need to address these sewerage deficiencies to protect the region's water resources.
