Italians Embrace AC Despite Health Worries Amid Rising Heat

Italy is experiencing a significant cultural shift driven by relentless heat waves, with a substantial increase in air-conditioning adoption. In 2024, 56 percent of Italian households reported having installed air-conditioning, a sharp rise from just under 30 percent in 2013. This trend is particularly pronounced in Sicily, where three out of four households now use AC, up from about one in three a decade prior.

Despite traditional beliefs that cold air causes ailments like muscle cramps and respiratory problems, Italians are increasingly turning to artificial cooling. Rising temperatures, with August 2024 being Italy's hottest on record, have made this adaptation necessary for many. Concerns about health effects persist, with experts advising moderation and proper temperature settings.

The increased adoption is also linked to the decreasing cost of air-conditioning units, with prices falling significantly over the past two decades. However, this broader usage has led to higher energy bills for consumers, with average summer utility expenses rising by 25 percent since 2021.

Environmental experts highlight that widespread AC use can exacerbate climate issues by taxing electricity grids and increasing carbon emissions. Cities like Agrigento are exploring solutions such as planting trees and installing solar panels to mitigate the need for excessive cooling.
