Summary
- Plans submitted for wetlands with bird hides and Sand Martin sites.
- Restoration aims to transform pasture into a complex wetland system.
- Wetlands will boost biodiversity, store carbon, and reduce flooding.

Manx Wildlife Trust has submitted plans to establish a new wetland area at Ballacosnahan farm in Patrick, Isle of Man. This ambitious project aims to convert existing pastureland, described as having low ecological value, into a diverse wetland system.
The proposed development includes the creation of three bird hides and dedicated Sand Martin nesting sites. These features are designed to offer increased breeding opportunities for migratory birds and allow for sensitive public engagement with nature.
Beyond enhancing wildlife habitats, the wetlands are anticipated to provide significant environmental benefits. These include boosting overall biodiversity, improving carbon and water storage capacity, and reducing the risk of downstream flooding.
The project also aims to reintroduce rare wetland plants, contributing to species recovery on the island. The land will continue to be utilized for seasonal grazing as part of a working farm, integrating conservation with agricultural practices.
