Basking Sharks Return: Isle of Man Sees Majestic Comeback

Basking sharks have made a remarkable comeback to the Isle of Man this summer after a period of absence. Once a common sight, their numbers had dwindled significantly, with research stopped in 2022 due to a drastic decline in sightings. Theories for their disappearance ranged from warmer seas to underwater electricity cables.

This year, however, the outlook has dramatically improved. More than 100 basking shark sightings have been recorded in the island's waters, particularly in the southwest. This resurgence is linked to a flourishing population of copepods, a crucial food source for these gentle giants.

The reappearance of these magnificent creatures, some of the largest wildlife in Britain, has thrilled local spotters and indicates a positive shift in their environment. Their migration routes are vast, with tagged sharks previously observed as far south as Morocco and west to Newfoundland, highlighting their extensive oceanic travels.
