Island Nations Face Inevitable Drowning
13 Feb
Summary
- Kiribati and Maldives will be lost to rising sea levels.
- Speed of temperature increase, not average, poses main threat.
- Global warming's point of no return is a complex concept.

The island nations of Kiribati and the Maldives are predicted to be submerged by rising sea levels caused by climate change. According to climate expert Alexey Kokorin, for Kiribati, the point of no return has already been crossed, making its eventual disappearance an inevitability. The Maldives is expected to face a similar fate.
The primary danger lies not in the overall rise of global temperatures but in the rapid pace at which this warming is occurring. This swift increase in temperature is triggering dangerous phenomena, emphasizing the urgent need to curb climate change before more countries are affected.
While some scientists discuss a global "point of no return" for climate change, Kokorin suggests this term is open to interpretation. He highlights that the goal is not to revert to 19th or 20th-century climate conditions, which is practically impossible. Therefore, applying a definitive "point of no return" to the entire Earth might be misleading.
