Ireland Braces for Heatwave: Water Savings Urged
8 Jul
Summary
- Water conservation is advised across Ireland due to rising temperatures.
- Nighttime water restrictions are already in place for 13 supplies in the Republic.
- Temperatures could reach 30C in the Republic, with no rain forecast for a week.

Homes throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have been advised to reduce water consumption as temperatures are predicted to rise significantly this week. NI Water has requested that gardens refrain from using sprinklers or hosepipes, emphasizing that this practice can quickly deplete water reserves, much of which is lost to evaporation in hot weather. Similar advice has been issued by Uisce Éireann, which noted that in many areas, including Greater Dublin, water is being consumed faster than it can be replenished.
Nighttime restrictions are currently active on 13 water supplies in the Republic of Ireland, a precautionary measure affecting primarily parts of counties Kilkenny, Tipperary, Donegal, Cork, and Meath. Temperatures have been building, reaching 26C in County Down earlier this week, with similar conditions expected to persist. The Republic anticipates even higher temperatures, potentially around 30C, increasing the likelihood of an official heatwave declaration if 25C is recorded for three consecutive days. With no rain forecast for at least a week, pressure on water resources is expected to mount as demand increases for household needs and outdoor watering.
