A black bear sustained critical injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Aspdin Road near Hekkla, Ontario. A staff member from the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary discovered the injured animal, which had initially fled into the woods.
A four-person team from the sanctuary eventually located and sedated the bear using a syringe pole. The animal was then transported to the sanctuary for immediate care.
Diagnostic imaging revealed that the bear suffered from head trauma, a dislocated hind paw, and a fracture to her snout. She was also noted to be underweight for her age, raising concerns about her winter survival.
