Polluted Indrayani Teems With Life: Study Reveals Rich Flora, Fauna
18 Oct
Summary
- 169 plant and 107 bird species found along polluted Indrayani.
- Study recorded 30 ecologically rich stretches despite high pollution.
- Faecal coliform found in all water samples; invasive tilapia dominates fish.
The Indrayani river, facing significant pollution and fish deaths, continues to host a remarkable array of biodiversity. A recent assessment, conducted between November 2025 and March 2026, identified 169 plant species and 107 bird species along its banks, highlighting 30 ecologically rich stretches. This study, supported by the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad River Revival initiatives, also documented 22 butterfly and eight odonate species.
However, pollution remains a critical issue. All water samples collected contained faecal coliform bacteria, with the Moshi-Alandi stretch being particularly contaminated. Invasive tilapia were prevalent, while native Deccan Mahseer were absent. Experts noted industrial effluents entering the river, emphasizing the need for further studies on heavy metal levels.
The report praised a 10-acre reserve forest near Tulapur as an example of surviving riverine biodiversity. It urged immediate measures such as stopping sewage and waste discharge at source, prioritizing the Moshi-Alandi stretch, and protecting natural riverine habitats. Recommendations also include conducting ecological assessments before development, removing invasive species, and regular biodiversity monitoring.
