E-Waste Crisis: 17 States Lack Recycling Facilities
19 Feb
Summary
- 17 Indian states and UTs, including Delhi, lack e-waste recycling facilities.
- Delhi and 21 other regions do not maintain records on e-waste transportation.
- Seven pollution bodies, including Delhi's, have completed e-waste inventorisation.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has alerted the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that 17 Indian states and Union Territories, including Delhi, are without e-waste recycling facilities. These regions, along with Delhi, also do not maintain records on the interstate movement of electronic waste. The NGT is reviewing the e-waste management status across the country.
Despite these deficiencies, Delhi's Pollution Control Committee is one of seven state pollution bodies that have completed a comprehensive inventory of 106 categories of electronic equipment waste. This inventorisation is crucial for estimating waste generation. Delhi primarily relies on recyclers outside its borders, often located in the National Capital Region, for processing its e-waste.
The CPCB informed the tribunal that draft guidelines for nationwide e-waste inventorisation have been prepared and shared with all states and UTs. The tribunal has directed the CPCB to submit a further status report by May 21, indicating the ongoing nature of this regulatory oversight.
