18 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Big cats are vital for healthy ecosystems and climate action.
- India leads International Big Cat Alliance to protect seven species.
- India will host a Global Big Cats Summit in New Delhi in 2026.
At the COP30 Summit in Brazil, India's Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called for intensified global efforts to protect big cats, stressing their integral role in climate action. He explained that the health of big cat populations directly correlates with the vitality of ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, and water systems, which are crucial for carbon storage.
The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), spearheaded by India, aims to unite nations in conserving seven big cat species. The alliance focuses on curbing illegal wildlife trade, preserving habitats, and mobilizing financial resources. Minister Yadav highlighted India's conservation successes, such as doubling the tiger population, and announced New Delhi will host a Global Big Cats Summit in 2026.
"Protecting big cats is protecting our shared planet and our future," Yadav stated, advocating for unified global cooperation. He outlined IBCA's potential to offer technical assistance, capacity building, and financial mechanisms, including biodiversity-carbon credits, to support member countries in their conservation endeavors.
