India Ranks 9th Among Countries Worst Hit by Climate Disasters in 30 Years

The Climate Risk Index (CRI) report, released on November 12, 2025 during the ongoing COP30 conference, has ranked India as the 9th most affected country by climate-related disasters over the past 30 years. The report, published annually by Germanwatch, a Bonn-based non-governmental organization, measures the consequences of extreme weather events on countries.
According to the CRI, between 1995 and 2024, India recorded 80,000 fatalities, accounting for 9.6% of the global climate disaster death toll of 832,000. The report states that India faced 430 extreme weather events, including floods, heatwaves, cyclones, and droughts, which caused economic losses worth $170 billion. Notable disasters include the 1998 Gujarat and 1999 Odisha cyclones, the 1993 Northern India floods, the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, and recurring heatwaves.
The CRI report highlights that the poorer countries in the Global South, including India, are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change. With limited coping capacity, these nations bear the brunt of extreme weather events, underscoring the urgent need for global action on climate resilience and adaptation.
