India Monsoon Unleashes Fury: Red Alerts Sounded
6 Jul
Summary
- Mumbai and surrounding regions face heavy rainfall and flash flood risks.
- Mumbai-Pune expressway traffic suspended due to landslide and flooding.
- Monsoon activity expected to persist across Maharashtra through the week.

Western India is currently experiencing severe monsoon conditions, with heavy rainfall, widespread flooding, and landslides affecting several regions. Mumbai and nearby areas like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are facing intense showers, leading to a 'red' alert being issued for July 6th and 7th. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a moderate to high flash flood risk for numerous districts, including Mumbai City, Thane, and Pune, due to saturated ground conditions.
Transportation has been significantly disrupted, particularly the vital Mumbai-Pune expressway. Both the expressway and the old highway connecting the cities were closed on Monday morning following a landslide and severe waterlogging, which included a collapsed concrete pillar. A separate landslide near Lohgad Fort also raised concerns about potential trapped individuals, prompting immediate rescue efforts.
The monsoon is expected to remain active across Maharashtra for the rest of the week. While Konkan-Goa and parts of Madhya Maharashtra anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday, Marathwada is likely to see lighter showers. Rainfall intensity is expected to gradually decrease after July 8th across the Konkan region.
