The southwest monsoon has intensified across India, bringing heavy rainfall and significant disruptions. Many regions are grappling with flooded roads, severe waterlogging, and traffic chaos. Sadly, some states have reported fatalities due to these extreme weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strong warning, indicating that central India will experience a very active monsoon for the next five to six days. Over twenty states, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until July 8.
The monsoon system has now advanced significantly, covering large parts of North and West India, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Delhi is now fully under the monsoon's influence, with further expansion expected in the coming days.
Coastal Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, along with Gujarat, faces the highest risk. Extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in these areas, with intense spells also expected in south Gujarat, Konkan-Goa, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Saurashtra-Kutch.
Eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Maharashtra, and Odisha are forecasted to experience very heavy rainfall. Heavy showers are also predicted for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, and several northern states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Delhi and its surrounding regions are bracing for continued rain and thunderstorms. Similar weather patterns are expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is forecast to receive heavy rain from July 5th to 7th, with western parts experiencing it earlier and again later in the week.
The hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also under active monsoon conditions, with very heavy showers likely in isolated areas. Eastern Rajasthan anticipates heavy rainfall from July 4th to 8th, with possibilities of dust storms and gusty winds.
Odisha is particularly vulnerable, with a red alert issued for extremely heavy rainfall on July 3rd and 4th. Widespread rainfall is expected across the state until July 8th. Gangetic West Bengal and parts of Bihar and Jharkhand are also alerted for heavy rainfall and potential lightning.
The northeastern states will experience hot and humid conditions initially, but heavy rainfall is expected in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until July 8th. Assam and Meghalaya may see thunderstorms. Southern states like Kerala and coastal Karnataka could face heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 8th, with heavy showers in south interior Karnataka from July 5th-8th.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged until July 8th. While frequent rainfall will bring cooler days, humidity might persist in some northeastern areas. Authorities are advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from vulnerable areas, and be prepared for urban disruptions.
