IIT Delhi to Test Delhi's Sewage Plant Performance
15 Jul
Summary
- IIT Delhi tasked with evaluating 29 Delhi sewage treatment plants.
- Focus on disinfection systems' effectiveness against faecal coliform bacteria.
- Contract awarded following NGT intervention on TOI report.
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has commissioned IIT Delhi to conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of its 29 sewage treatment plants (STPs). This Rs17.7 lakh contract, initiated on June 5, 2026, mandates an independent assessment of whether the STPs' disinfection systems effectively eliminate faecal coliform bacteria.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered this scrutiny following a Times of India report published on February 19, 2024. The report revealed that a majority of Delhi's STPs were not meeting prescribed standards and lacked disinfection capabilities, raising concerns about the Yamuna River's water quality.
IIT Delhi's work order was issued on April 29, 2026, after a review meeting. The institute is required to submit its findings within 15 days of completing sampling. This initiative aims to ensure treated sewage meets the required standards before discharge, addressing critical environmental concerns for the Yamuna.
