Idaho Grand Fir Crowned 2026 Capitol Christmas Tree

A grand fir from Idaho's Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests has been selected to serve as the 2026 Capitol Christmas tree. This annual tradition, overseen by the Architect of the Capitol's office and the U.S. Forest Service, brings a special tree to the nation's capital each year.

The chosen tree, an 80-foot grand fir, was discovered within the Salmon River Ranger District during a weeklong search. It was praised for its ideal shape and symmetrical boughs, embodying this year's theme, "over the rivers and through the woods."

Harvest of the tree is scheduled for October, after which it will embark on a journey to Washington, D.C., for a public lighting ceremony in December. Idaho residents have the opportunity to create handmade ornaments that reflect their state, with a submission deadline of September 1.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins expressed excitement in sharing "a little piece of the Gem State" with the nation, highlighting America's national forests as treasured resources.
